H1N1 “Swine
Flu”
Notice to Parents
Your child may have been exposed to the Novel Influenza A H1N1 Virus (“Swine Flu”).
There is a probable case of H1N1 flu in the Brookside community. Although the case has not yet been confirmed, approximately 90-95% of probable cases will test positive for the H1N1 virus.
Exposure Date: 6/9/09
Observation through 6/16/09
Symptoms: Please observe your child for flu like symptoms, including fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, diarrhea and/or vomiting.
The Novel Influenza A H1N1 virus is a new flu virus that has become established around the world. There is currently no vaccine against H1N1, but there are actions that people can take to help prevent the spread of germs, as recommended by the Marin County Department of Health and Human Services, California Department of Public Health, and the CDC:
- People experiencing flu symptoms should stay home from work, school, camp and sport activities for seven days after the onset of their symptoms or 24 hours after their fever resolves whichever is longer.
- People ill with flu like symptoms should limit contact with others and call their healthcare provider for advice.
- Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; alcohol-based hand sanitizer may also be used.
- Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing either with the inside of your elbow or with a tissue that is disposed of immediately into the trash.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Talk to your child about practicing good hygiene, such as hand washing and covering coughs/sneezes.
- Testing is not recommended.
- The CDC does not recommend school closure in the event of one probable or confirmed case of H1N1 flu.
Thank you for your continued support to keep our community healthy. Have a great summer.
Sincerely,
