Transitional Kindergarten
The Ross Valley School District will implement changes to the enrollment of students for Kindergarten and eligibility for a Transitional Kindergarten program as required by the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 (SB1381), beginning the school year 2012-2013.
Previous law in California required school districts to offer a Kindergarten program to all eligible students. Currently the age requirement is that a child must be 5 years old by December 2nd to enroll in Kindergarten. The goals and objective of this new legislation is to change the date of entry into Kindergarten. The following provides information related to the age of students enrolling in Kindergarten:
- School Year 2012-2013 - Must be 5 years old by November 1st
- School Year 2013-2014 - Must be 5 years old by October 1st
- School Year 2014-2015 - Must be 5 years old by September 1st
Every year thereafter, a child must be 5 years old by September 1st to enroll in Kindergarten
This legislation also requires all California school districts to provide a Transitional Kindergarten program so that children who will be affected by this change -- those with birthdays between September and December -- will have an opportunity to continue building their skills and abilities. Their time in Transitional Kindergarten will help them to succeed in Kindergarten, become leaders in the classroom and confidently navigate the school day routine. Students are eligible for Transitional Kindergarten in the 2012-13 school year if their 5th birthday is between November 2 and December 2.
