Communication Philosophy

December 02, 2008

The Ross Valley School District believes that effective communication empowers our entire community (students, parents, staff, teachers, administrators, others) to understand, authentically participate in decision-making, and to support a high quality education for all students.  We commit to working together in a respectful, collaborative manner to build relationships that keep the focus of all dialogue on our students. We have created four pillars of communication; trust, responsibility, respect and caring to support relationships of trust.  We are committed to using a wide range of tools to allow for multiple opportunities to connect. (Strategic Plan: Goals C1, C2,C6, Mission Statement: last two bullets, 4 pillars)

The District Leadership Council developed Meeting Ground Rules to be used at all District meetings.  The board meeting guidelines from the Governance Handbook were used as a reference in creating these rules.

Meeting Ground Rules/ Norms for Effective Communication

1.Show Up (on time, stay until the end; honor time boundaries)
2.Pay attention (to heart and meaning)
3.Be honest (without judgment and blame)
4.Not be attached to outcome (suspend judgment; allowing everyone opportunities to speak)
5.Come from your experience (ā€œIā€ messages; not speak for group)
6.Check out your assumptions (be direct; be aware of your assumptions)
7.Assume good will, value and intention  (all want belonging, acceptance and significance)
8.Right to pass/stay the course (silence acceptable and possibly important; allow for silent moments)
 9.Confidentiality (boundary keeping)
10.Do what you say you will do (follow-through and accountability, support the discussion of the group)
