Optional Insurance for Devices in 2020-21

We’re going to be offering an optional insurance program for any families that would benefit from the peace of mind of knowing that if an accident occurs the cost of repair would be covered.  The insurance would cover the following items accidental damage (cracked screens, and liquid spills), liquid submersion, fire/flood damage, vandalism, natural disasters, and power surge due to lighting.  More information will be made available in a subsequent email out to all families who’ve borrowed a device, either last year or this year.

Buying a Device for your Child

For our 3rd - 5th-grade students, we highly recommend that if you’re able to purchase them a device for use at home that it be a Chromebook.  They meet all of the needs of the in-class instruction, are affordable, and are simple to reset should problems occur. While we won’t make any specific make/model recommendations, we have curated a list for you based on Auto-Update Expiration (AUE)  dates that Google uses.  Every Chromebook comes with a hidden expiration date after which Google will no longer support the operating system or offer device enhancements through software updates.  So while you may see great deals on Chromebooks in the $100 range they may be close to their update expiration, even though they’ve never been opened.  More information and a list of models specific AUE’s can be found here: https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en

Our curated list of Chromebooks is available here and is only based upon the AUE (all listed devices will get updates for the next 6 years), we are in no way endorsing the performance, feature-sets or durability of any of these devices: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RaNfkixiXgp_OY7Nklxzr3R1kqkR7OMBvoYacYw521E/edit?usp=sharing

iOS and Android Apps to Support Distance Learning for TK-2nd Grade Students

Our wonderful TK-2nd grade teachers have identified several apps that they will likely use as part of their curriculum and instruction during distance learning in 2020-21.  That list is available here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ZgAh-IptRYzCCb5qddQvb5jw7JQmNt9myIv0_DHs50E/edit?usp=sharing

*All apps listed are available for free from the Apple App Store.  If you own an Android tablet most if not all of the required apps will be available on the Google Play Store as well.
